Abstract
The purpose of this study was to reveal and understand the impact of art therapists¡¯ experiences during the therapeutic process on children with ADHA. Participants included 7 art therapists who provided treatment for ADHD children. Participants were individually interviewed and data was collected from therapy sessions lasting 90-120 minutes between May and September 2015. To reveal the participants¡¯ experience ¡°just as it was¡±, data was analyzed utilizing the Moustkas¡¯ phenomenological inquiry method. Results showed 27 units of significance, 10 higher themes and 4 fundamental themes. The fundamental themes were described as , , , . Structured conclusions, nature and significances of this study are as follows: First, negative emotions experienced both mentally and physically by therapists could be influenced by the behavioral features of children diagnosed with ADHD. Second, therapists intended to interpret the children¡¯s behavioral features within their own personal worldview. Third, therapists experienced that although they applied the theory and skills of art therapy deemed appropriate for children with ADHD, they were not necessarily applicable to the participants in this study. Fourth, through the therapeutic experience with ADHD children, the therapists experienced ontological self-reflection on their suitability as therapists and how to continue as therapists in the future. Fifth, the therapists included in this study suggested there should be a change in the therapeutic approach for ADHD children. Based on these results, it is suggested that therapists could reach a better understanding of the essence of suffering experienced by children with ADHD, and appease their pain, by adjusting their perspective from ¡°judging¡± to ¡°understanding.¡±
